The area was founded in 1864 when the first ferry service began on the Snake River, triggering a new tide of westward migration. The community was initially called Taylor’s Crossing, then Eagle Rock, and finally the name Idaho Falls was adopted in 1891 when the city was incorporated. Idaho Falls today stands as the commercial and cultural hub for eastern Idaho and parts of western Wyoming and southern Montana.
